Biostratigraphic data

In 2024, NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij) delivered biostratigraphic data to TNO for 162 wells in the Dutch part of the continental shelf. This data was collected between 1961 and 2021. It involves counts of mainly microfossils (pollen, spores, foraminifera, dinoflagellates, algae, ostracods and more) and a small amount of macrofossils (ammonites, bivalves). Such fossils are used to make (relative) age determinations and enable correlations between wells. Interpretations regarding the depositional environment are also possible. However, it should be noted that this involves very specific “raw” data that cannot be used without palynological knowledge. See the image below as an example. Two files are available for downloading: a file with the data itself, in SBG format (to be opened with StrataBugs) and an excel file with metadata (which includes well names, coordinates and sampling depths per well). If one does not have access to StrataBugs, but is interested in the raw data of a number of wells, a selection of the data can be requested via the Service Desk.

The data can be downloaded via the following link: link.
